When Patrice O’Neal passed away earlier this year, the comedy community was rightly devastated. He was widely considered one the most impressive comedians alive, despite having achieved only moderate popular success. Part of the reason for this was that Patrice’s recorded material never fully captured the experience of being in the room with him; this album, released after his death is the exception. One thing that separates this album from his specials is how clearly and expertly Patrice blurs the separation between jokes and conversation with the audience. Pay attention to how effortlessly Patrice finds comedy within the room at the beginning of the albm, how he gets the audience to open up about their personal lives, and how quick he is to call people out on their bullshit. Seriously terrific.

I could write a whole lot more about Patrice O’Neal and his technique, but for now… enjoy:

People either hate Doug Stanhope or they love him; I happen to fall in the later camp. Stanhope’s brutal honesty and total disregard for taboos makes him one of the more under-rated comedians working today. Take a listen, just make sure there aren’t any kids around when you do.

I’ve been trying to post a lot of retro stuff here lately, but by no means is that all I plan on sharing with you all. Pete Holmes’ first album, released late last year, ranks high in my list of favorite comedy albums of 2011.

This album is probably long overdue. Holmes’ has been on the comedy circuit long enough to have released a few albums, but in a way, this exists as one of the album’s key strengths; not only because the album highlights the comedians best material to date (without feeling like a “best of”), but also because it successfully includes a wide variety of joke-styles that Holmes has employed throughout his career. This means that while Holmes recent material about how the internet is changing society is present, so is his older, sillier stuff. Of course one of the main things that makes Pete Holmes so fun to listen to is simply his on stage personality. He’s clearly having such a blast that it’s hard to do anything but smile.

Pete Holmes is a staple of the LA comedy scene. Be sure to look for him on the calendar. He shows up on there quite a bit.
